At Queensbridge our vision is to have a school where pupils are empowered with the master skill: Reading

We read for learning and we read for pleasure, widely and often. Through all aspects of school life, we strive to ensure that every student has a reading-rich experience throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This gives our learners the best start in terms of both academic success and personal wellbeing.

Our library is literally and metaphorically at the heart of our school, where it is a well maintained and popular hub of creativity and learning. Mrs Chilton, our Reading Engagement Mentor and School Librarian, is on hand at all times for advice and support with matching pupils to their next favourite read.

    Each half-term, our students enjoy a vibrant Library Bulletin showcasing everything happening in and around our school library, the heart of our school.
    This dynamic update highlights the wide range of exciting opportunities available to all students—from clubs and challenges to special events and new reads.
    Our bulletin strengthens our sense of belonging and perfectly reflects our school values and makes sure EVERY student knows they have somewhere they can go to try something new, stretch themselves, showcase a talent, meet friends and make discoveries by reading new and exciting new titles.

    Our adventuring community has critically hit new heights, expanding to six full parties with over 40 brave heroes. With more quests, more chaos, and more dice than ever, the campaign just keeps getting better. Roll initiative — the adventure and storytelling continues!

  • Word Play Week: Inspiring Creativity Through Local Writers

    During the week commencing 10th November, our school proudly hosted Word Play, an exciting literary event organised by local business How Brave is the Wren. The week was filled with creativity, imagination, and inspiration as we welcomed four incredible writers who shared their passion for storytelling with our students.

    • Steven Camden, acclaimed author and spoken word artist, led a Year 7 workshop and delivered an engaging assembly, sparking enthusiasm for creative expression.
    • Kenechi Udogu, a talented dystopian author, captivated Year 8 students with a thought-provoking workshop exploring the art of world-building.
    • Beth O’Brien, poet and writer, worked with Year 7 students, encouraging them to explore disability in writing and approach their own writing in a new and thought provoking way.
    • Finally, Liz Hyder, award-winning author and Netflix writer, hosted two dynamic sessions titled “The Writer’s Room”, where students pitched and designed their very own Netflix series—an unforgettable experience that blended creativity with real-world storytelling.

    The atmosphere throughout the week was electric. Students were engaged, excited, and inspired, embracing the opportunity to learn from professionals in the literary world. Events like Word Play not only promote a love of reading and writing but also empower students to see themselves as creators and storytellers.

    A huge thank you to How Brave is the Wren and our visiting authors for making this week such a success. We look forward to continuing to celebrate the power of words in the future!

  • Author Tia Fisher Inspires Students with “Crossing The Line”

    On Monday, 6th October, our school had the privilege of welcoming acclaimed author Tia Fisher, who visited to discuss her powerful novel Crossing The Line. The book tackles real-life challenges faced by young people today, making her visit especially relevant and impactful for our students.

    Tia began the day by leading a thought-provoking workshop with a group of Year 9 and Year 10 students. During the session, pupils explored how verse can be used to express emotions and ideas, sparking meaningful conversations about identity, resilience, and choices. Students were highly engaged, asking insightful questions and sharing their own perspectives.

    Later, Tia delivered a whole-year assembly to Year 9, where she spoke about the themes of her book and the importance of finding your voice. Her interactive approach encouraged students to think deeply about the issues raised in Crossing The Line and how they relate to their own lives.

    The visit was an inspiring experience for everyone involved, leaving students motivated to read, write, and reflect on the power of words.

  • Preparing for our new readers

    As part of our commitment to fostering a love of reading, we were thrilled to welcome our incoming Year 7 students with special Reading Bags to kickstart their journey at our school.

    Each bag was thoughtfully prepared by our dedicated librarians and student leaders, and included a selection of items designed to inspire and support our new students over the summer:

    •  Kick by Mitch Johnson – a gripping and inspiring story to spark curiosity and discussion.
    •  A Summer Reading Challenge Booklet filled with fun activities to help students prepare for Year 7 and engage with their reading.
    •  A beautifully designed bookmark, created by one of our talented current students.
    •  A reusable water bottle to keep hydrated while reading in the sun.
    •  A few treats to enjoy while diving into a good book.

    These welcome bags are part of our wider mission as a Reading School – where reading is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that stories have the power to build empathy, expand horizons, and ignite imagination. By encouraging our new students to read over the summer, we hope to help them feel confident, connected, and ready for the exciting journey ahead.

    We can’t wait to hear what our new Year 7s think of Kick and to see how they tackle the reading challenge. Happy reading!
